ErrorCoins222 Pillar of the Community United States 1699 Posts	Posted 02/11/2014 01:08 am In this case, the top portion of the collar is broken away, and that is why we see the extra large rim area on the obverse. Since the collar was still in place close to the bottom of the collar (near the reverse), the metal wasn't able to expand outward there except in the small area where it did break away. That said, this is still a comparatively rare error category. In this case, only the upper margin of the collar's working face broke off. There are many types of collar breaks, as discussed in the November 22, 2010 Coin World.
