I had just bought a 1794 Large Cent but it weighs 12.45 grams instead of the 13.5 grams it should and the diameter is 27.81 millimeters instead of the 28 millimeters. 1 Gram seems like too large of an error that I think it may be a counterfeit. Can I get some help please? Thanks.

It looks OK to me, based on condition and patina. Low weight could be corrosion. I've also read that weight can vary as much as 10%. sending it to ANACS is an inexpensive way to find out. I'd expect it will come back as F Details Corrosion.

You might enjoy looking for your Sheldon variety in the photo gallery here:

I only have one, an S-23 with a scratched obverse. The shattered die is very obvious. Other varieties are trickier.

The weight is a bit extreme but between wear, corrosion, and simple inconsistency in the planchets weights due to crude equipment I do not find it a concern. (There was no official Weight Tolerance on the early cents, and when they did have tolerance standards for large cents it was +/- .454 grams) As to the diameter difference you have to remember that these coins were struck without collars and the final diameter of the coin was determined by the force of the strike and the softness of the planchet. The offical 28mm diameter is actually an average figure. Also the actual official figure was expressed as an inch fraction as the mint (and the US) did not adopt the metric system until 1866. (And yes officially the US adopted the metric system over 150 years ago, but we still haven't gotten around to dumping the English system.)
