I have been searching ebay for a 1921-D graded Mercury dime for about a month now. Looked at a few hundred more than once over this time. I cannot believe the different grading of say a PCGS and NGC VG08. Seems NGC coins are much nicer on the grading. Looked at four PCGS F12's. Two were only worth a G6 or 8. Very inconsistent. ANACS was a little better but overall NGC was the most consistent and the coins seemed to be a little nicer in the same grades. Has anyone else noticed this. I'm not a big fan of any of the TPG's but anymore after looking at hundreds of ungraded 21-D's and seeing how badly cleaned, polished, etc. these coins were I decided to only go with a graded coin.
Just my opinions. Get back to me with yours.

Not a fan of TPG's but I think NGC over grade by a point or two and PCGS & ANACS are closer to the actual but when it comes time to sell you will have an easier time selling a PCGS and get a bit more.IMHO,

Once you've looked at similar hundreds of TPG-graded coins, and factored in the varying age of the slabs and the wandering of grading standards over the years, you'll find that in the largest-possible picture they're not very different from each other. You'll likely find greater time-based differences within one TPG than comparing more than one.
Rest in Peace

with John1. Not a fan of slabs or 'slobberd "(thank you Bigg Fredd) my opinion has changed. As a rookie and still a rookie I'm still trying to learn the difference about a detailed coin. Cleaned, dipped, polished even whizzed etc. etc.. Buying a coin raw is a gamble in itself. Unless you know all the variables.
I will buy a TPG coin and have from CCF members.
A better way to save money on cost.
Wish more members posted coins for sale here at CCF.
Yes I'm biased about CCF.

For key dates I stick with NGC or PCGS and if you want an added bonus get one with a CAC sticker

Thanks for getting back to me with your opinions.

John 1: I have 6 registered sets going with PCGS now especially in Lincoln proofs and I will agree you will come out with more $ in the end with PCGS graded coins.

bpoc1: I also have bought from CCF members but they don't always have what I need. How many 21-D Merc's. are for sale on the CCF. Also ebay has a nice 14 days no hassle return rule now.

My new rule is if the coin is over a $100 I probably am going to try for graded one. I got stuck a few times on ungraded and had to send a few back. There is a lot of ungraded garbage being sold. What you see is not always what you get. I would be embarrassed to sell some of that stuff.

Thanks again guys. Keep the opinions coming.

Bought a few from cheap slabs a long time ago. Now my needs are at the upper end of the field. He is very good if you are just starting and need a lot of the lower common stuff.
