Yesterday, about an hour into my shift, I opened a bank roll of nickels. Out popped a 1943P Jefferson nickel. I was kind of busy with customers, so I set it aside to look at later. I bought it out of my till at lunch and went home. With the naked eye I could see steps! With my hand held microscope, I could see 4 (maybe 5?) steps with some wear.

How rare is it to find a War Nickel with steps?! This is the first one I've found in the twenty some years I've been collecting.

It's pretty uncommon to find any War Nickels in circulation that aren't heavily worn and tarnished to that ugly gray/black color.

Unless I'm completely misunderstanding how nickels are priced, they don't carry any significant premium unless all six steps are fully visible. What you have is probably worth more than standard silver melt, but only slightly. Most likely this was a coin that was pulled out of an album to be replaced with an upgrade, and the original owner pulled a "catch and release" to put it back into circulation for other collectors to find.

Looks like a nice strong strike, generally 5 or 6 full steps often carry a nice premium. This is a useful page I found for understanding the steps:

To me, any War Nickel is a good find. I was truly happy to find this one. It will definitely upgrade the one I have in the album.

mgillette, thank you for the link to that page. I had seen it before, but couldn't remember where.

I'll probably post it in the grading forum and see what it gets.

Anyone think it could benefit from a acetone bath? It has a glob and some other things going on.
