That 1283 penny ROCKS! I love it. Premium? Put it on ebay and fools will probably bid it up to the hundreds....but personally, I'd kept something like that. It's just cool!

I would like to keep it, but my wife thinks coin collecting is dumb, so if I made a good sale on at least one penny then she would realize that it's not all that bad. I have over 50 posts so I guess it's ok to see if anyone on the boards may be interested in buying it before I (may) put it on E-Bay. If interested, send me an offer through my message link on my profile. I'll leave it open until next Friday.

The 1283 cent looks like a piece of the die has broken away allowing the extra tail on the 9 to appear in raised relief just like the rest of the lettering. For that to happen, a small piece of metal (harder than copper!) would have to have gotten smashed between the die and a coin. I suppose it COULD happen. Maybe it's a wide die crack just starting to develop? Hopefully a true error expert will be able to respond. I've seen lots of die cracks, but errors resulting from foreign materials are much less common.

Where's coppercoins?
I know he deals mainly with varieties, but it would be cool to get his opinion on how this could have been made. I do like the foreign object theory, however.
