I just found in a face value bank roll what I believe to be a uncirculated 1970 S Small Date High 7. I just started collected so please correct me if I am wrong.

Three things I look at
for small date: top of 7 is in line (more or less) with tops of 9 and 0, bottom of 7 is even with bottom of 0, inner loop of the 9 is thinner and points toward 0
for large date: top of 7 is below tops of 9 and 0, bottom of 7 is below bottom of 0, inner loop of 9 is thick and points toward bottom of 7

Just a friendly FYI--the mintmark position isn't diagnostic for LD or SD--there are many LD dies and several SD dies. I haven't counted them all, has anyone? If you stare at a LD hard enough and in the right light or tilt, you can convince yourself it's a SD. I only say that from my own experience Large and small dates can be distinguished from the shapes of the 9, 7, and 0 digits. I look at the "7" first--a LD has a longer top stroke, and the diagonal goes below the baseline on the "0". Yours is a LD.

Thank you Fuzzy317, DVCollector and Rupester, I know, I understand it now.. which is the reason I joined this board. Thanks means a lot next time I will remember to judge by shape and stroke direction. I was misjudging based on mintmark position.

Good luck finding a SD! Several CCF members have found them in circulation, but I haven't yet.

Here is a sampling of 5 different dies that I've received pictures of so far. At one time I thought the small dates were from the same die, but they are not.

Coop, have you researched the small date dies for proofs? I wonder how many of those exist
