I was looking through some Morgan dollars today and broke out my 16x jeweler scope. I noticed a very peculiar "smear" on the "0" in the date of an 1880 Morgan dollar. What I find interesting is that the bottom of the zero looks like it melted away, slid down the coin and re-hardened. I can't explain why - it just looks like the zero is sitting on top of the coin face instead of being part of the metal. Is this something special? Or just a hard strike. This is the best photo I could get - an iPhone through the jeweler lens. Thanks much for your thoughts!

Welcome to Coin Community, CitizenDrew. Your Morgan suffered an unfortunate postmint hit - silver is plenty soft enough to show that "smearing" effect from a hit at the right angle. And you're right in assuming that's probably a "flap" of broken-loose metal at this point.

As I suspected. Thanks very much for the reply! I'd just not seen a strike like this one.
