I know this was done post mint, but wanted to know if anybody else has found one of these. I am not sure what it was coated with, but it looks like a bright silver. I can see some copper underneath showing where it has chipped. It was an very interesting find, at first I thought is was an 1943, then I saw a different date and almost fell out of my chair thinking it was an 1944 steel. It was an interesting find and will post some pics later. It was a nice dip job, there are no clumps and is coated nice.

Hello Chris
make sure it is not mercury. if it is get rid of it. we did that a lot in the 60's lol had a lot of mercury laying around back then I don't know why but I don't remember anyone that didn't have a jar of it laying in the garage or shed somewhere. if we only knew then what we know now lol.
but if it is mercury bury it as deep as you can dig lol that's just my Two Cents and I used to play with it as a kid. but I am now disables from bad bones (don't know if that was the reason and never will know) but why chance it.

Is there a way to tell if it is mercury? I was thinking that as some people coated the 43's in mercury to keep them shiny.

I'm not sure how to tell. you could always get the neighbor kids to lick on it and see what grows lol
(sorry neighbor kids do not lick it) lol
i think if it is dull it MAY be mercury if shinny then chrome if tarnished silver either way if it is anything but silver I would get rid of it just to be safe. but if it is silver there is not enough on it to amount to anything so play it safe and get rid of it. there was nothing minted in 57 that would come close to silver in color to worry about a possible error so just dump it to be safe

If that coin "feels oily, or slippery, it has been coated with mercury, and yes, GET RID OF IT! It is poisonous It, (mercury), will dissolve gold, so if you allow it to come into contact with anything gold, or gold-plated, there will be damage done. I also played with the stuff as a kid, and later found out how it was used by the miners. It, as I mentioned, woll dissolve gold, and was used to "almagamate gold". They used potatoes to "bake" out, or off the mercury, and end up with a porous gold pellet. They did NOT eat the spud! The "liquid mercury will vaporize readily with very little heat, so it behooves one to be very careful with it! The vapors are very poisonous, and can be fatal!.

Regardless of what it is plated in, it was done outside the mint and isn't an error - with that in mind, the coin is worth face value.

Mercury will not stay shiney for long ,, it turns black pretty quickly when in contact with air.

The coin is plated with something just what is hard to say !

Definitely post mint and most definitely not worth any premium.
