What would you grade it? Any idea on variety?

I would give it a technical grade of G obverse, VG reverse, but an overall grade of G-4. The general variety is small 0. It's not an Office Boy reverse. I don't have a reference on specific die attributions for his series.

This does appear to be the "STATESOFAMERICA" variety (the three words run together, with improper spacing). There is a small premium (about $2) for either the small 0 or the "STATESOFAMERICA," but no additional premium for both varieties (probably all "STATESOFAMERICA" varieties have the small 0).

I will go with G details. Looks like there is a large scratch on the bust.

G details. Barely. No way this one goes VG.

I believe it is the "STATESOF" variety (JR-1). However, I think you may be incorrect about not being a price difference. A G-6 just sold on ebay for $145 and an F-12 just sold for $519. Heritage was showing similar results for an F-12 coin selling for $397. These are all for the "STATESOF" variety and coins that are not of that variety are selling for considerably less.

yhbearcats, Thanks for your response, especially regarding prices realized. I was referring to the Coin Prices/Coins magazines (same publisher) price guides. In G-4 they show: 1820 Large 0 $42 1820 Small 0 $43 1820 STATESOF $43 The Red Book refers to the reverse variety as STATESOFAMERICA. I suppose if picking one variety name as the official name is important, the John Reich (JR) variety name of STATESOF would take precedence. But then consider that PCGS calls it STATESOFAMERICA (link below). I would argue that STATESOFAMERICA is more appropriate, since the three words are continuous, not just the first two. http://www.pcgscoinfacts.com/Coin/Detail/38778

You are correct, it is referred to both ways. My guess is calling it "STATESOF" is just shortening of the name, like calling Thomas, Tom.
If I remember correctly, I believe on the slabs it is just called "STATESOF", probably just to save space and ink.

She is a nice dime, but teeters on the border between AG-3 and G-4.
