What is a lowball? Do people collect them?

A Lowball is the lowest graded coin of that particular coin. Sometimes the Lowball is worth quite a bit of premium over an average circulated version of the same coin, since natural wear to that extent on a coin is pretty uncommon!

Collectors compete for the finest coins usually, but lowball means the opposite of that. The worst (usually certified) example you can find. PCGS has Registry Sets set up where people can compete for the "best" Lowball Type Set or Morgan dollar set. It's kinda fun ... unlike regular Registry Sets where a one-point upgrade (say from MS63 to MS64), every "upgrade" in a lowball set means you (theoretically) make money, since the lower-grade coin should be cheaper! (Of course, this excludes any demand factors.) Of course Lowball sets do not have to be certified, you can simply buy the worst examples you can find. But you need to be expert to avoid counterfeits and know how to grade properly. Best Regards, George

Quote: since natural wear to that extent on a coin is pretty uncommon! The key here is natural or " honest " wear. The fascination is the the history of a coin with that much wear. Especially classic coins, where have they been? Whose pockets did they spend that much time in, in 1889. Did it travel east to west on a stagecoach in someones pocket ? Was it spent at a saloon in the old west as some cowboy's week's pay. Coin intentional worn down to G or PO condition are not lowballs and signs of artificial wear will not be graded by TPG's. This is where knowledge comes in, the difference between a true lowball and a " counterfeit " lowball.

Lowball stops when a coin is SO worn that, if it is not a single year type, you cannot read the date.

Quote: Here's my Merc lowball...a 1916-D.... Might be a 15D? Lowballing is different for different people. Lowball for a coin is somewhat what has been noted already. Lowball for some is used as term when someone offers a lot, lot less for something than it's worth.

thq,
I see that you made the connection between my username and the UP of Michigan. You have a ways to go for a real yooper winter. My home area YTD snowfall 254", 46" on the ground.
I ,fortunately, have not experienced a winter there in 31 years and plan on keeping it that way. 30 winters in Seattle, this one in Colorado Springs. However, I have spent the last 7 summers there since my retirement, on the shore of Lake Superior. Love it!

Kids here dug snow tunnels but we didn't get to the point of digging car tunnels. Normally the weather here comes from the west. This year it's coming from Flin Flon.
I've been in some good coin shops in Holland. Do you have any up on the UP?

Not close to where I live in the summer. I am planning to do some CRH up there this summer in hopes of finding some Philadelphia mintmarks to fill holes and upgrade pennies, nickel, and dimes. Get lots of nice looking D coins here in Colorado Springs but most of the P's are pretty beat up.
