I'm awful at grading coins but I'll try and the more experienced folks can help us.

I'm thinking it looks cleaned because the details look worn especially in the chest of the eagle but the surface looks to be in a much better condition. The two don't add up.

It's a Counterfeit, 1879 was a Proof only year for the Trade dollar. I have attached an image of a genuine example below.

You can see on your friends coin, that the details are very mushy and incomplete. The coin also has a grainy look to it, which is very common for counterfeits.

The other dead giveaway (in addition to Canadian-Banknotes' accurate words) is the circular pattern on the reverse - coins struck by the US Mint just don't show that. It's a planchet prepared in a completely different way than in America.

And even aside the point that the lettering is incomplete, it's the wrong lettering. The circular openings (this is just the only part I'm touching on, not the "only") in Trade dollar - D, O, R - should be flat-sided, not round.

If you study it closer, the devices are incorrect as well mushy in appearance. Another dead giveaway.

with everyone above, it's definitely fake. The poor details really give it away, plus the wear pattern is strange.

The eagle's wings are a good clue that it's a fake.

The blurred design is a good red flag it is fake.
