I'm thinking it looks cleaned because the details look worn especially in the chest of the eagle but the surface looks to be in a much better condition. The two don't add up. Canadian-Banknotes Pillar of the Community Canada 4944 Posts	Posted 02/18/2014 3:29 pm It's a Counterfeit, 1879 was a Proof only year for the Trade dollar. I have attached an image of a genuine example below. You can see on your friends coin, that the details are very mushy and incomplete. SsuperDdave Moderator United States 23522 Posts	Posted 02/18/2014 4:11 pm The other dead giveaway (in addition to Canadian-Banknotes' accurate words) is the circular pattern on the reverse - coins struck by the US Mint just don't show that. It's a planchet prepared in a completely different way than in America. And even aside the point that the lettering is incomplete, it's the wrong lettering. The circular openings (this is just the only part I'm touching on, not the "only") in Trade dollar - D, O, R - should be flat-sided, not round. Report this Post to the Staff
