Here are two halves that I have had for a while just so I could have one of the type each, They are nothing special but in fair shape....I will also add a trip down memory lane as I have a 1975 Blue Book 32nd Edition..This will include the prices from almost 40 years apart. Notice the descriptions and differences thereof. To those that know these coins, let me know your thoughts on grades etc.

First 1831 Bust - **********************************
1975 Blue Book 32nd Edition <> Mintage 5,873,660 >
*****************************************************
> F - Clasp and adjacent curl clearly outlined with slight details ($12)
> VF - Clasp at shoulder clear, Curl has wear only on highest point, Hair over brow distinguishable ($15)
*** No higher descriptions

2014 Red Book 67th Edition <> Mintage 5,873,660 >
> VF-20 - Clasp at shoulder clear, Wear visible on highest point of curl, Hair over brow distinguishable. ($120)
> EF-40 - Clasp and adjacent curl fairly sharp, Brow and hair above distinct, Curls well defined. ($180)
> AU-50 - Trace of wear on hair over eye and over ear. ($350)

1831-Bust-/1855-Seated-Liberty-Half---The-Twist?--1975-Bbook

Mintage checks and the Modern Red Book has better descriptions etc..

Note - writing on the side of coin looks in great shape.
My guess is EF-45/AU-50?

Next is the 1855 Seated Liberty - *****************
1975 Blue Book 32nd Edition <> Mintage 759,500 >
***************************************************
> F - Liberty complete but weak ($10)
> VF - Liberty mostly sharp ($13)
*** No higher descriptions

2014 Red Book 67th Edition <> Mintage 759,500 >
> F-12 - Liberty complete but weak ($65)
> VF-20 - Liberty mostly sharp ($80)
> EF-40 - Liberty entirely sharp, scroll edges and clasp distinct ($135)

1831-Bust-/1855-Seated-Liberty-Half---The-Twist?--1975-Bbook

Mintage checks and the Modern Red Book has the SAME descriptions etc for the grades etc..

My guess is VF-20/VF-30?

The bust half looks to be about VF-35 to EF-40 details. Cleaned. The seated half looks to be VF-25.

Interesting exhibit of how the market for higher grade coins has developed over the years with prices greatly outpacing those of lower graded coins.

For those looking, yes the Bust has been cleaned....by me. I know some do not like that but it was a darn ugly coin and you could not see much detail. Since I will not be selling it, I dipped it for 1 sec and rinsed with Acetone. I was very pleased with how it came out. I can see details that I could not before.

Most guessed EF~ for the Bust and VF~ for the SL. I was not far off in my guesses.

Thanks for looking.

Also, for the statement about higher grades going up, that is so true and I value that 1975 book that my dad bought. I like looking at things....a time machine would be nice with the knowledge I have now.
