Hey Guys!

I happened upon an estate sale, and came across some coins I drooled over and bid on (and won, obviously, lol)

My question is about the 1838 half. Is there anyway to remove the tape residue?

Pure acetone should take care of that. Soak it in a sealed container and check on it after about an hour and see what you have. Soaking the coin in acetone won't hurt the coin or give it a cleaned designation. It will only remove the organic materials (tape) and it will leave the natural tone intact.

Acetone (pure) will do the trick. It melts away tape better than anything else and will not react to the metal. Take an after picture and post it for the group.

Will do! What about the gunk on the 21 peace? The little black spots are tarry (I picked at one with a briar)

Thank you guys!

I gave $260 for them all. I hoped I did well enough for resale or upgrade trades, but I think I'm in too deep. lol

Although acetone is the proper solution for the tape residue, consider carefully what a successful removal will do to the look of the surfaces. If the coin acquired patina at different rates in the areas not covered by tape, the resulting surface will be "splotchy" in the opposite direction, and possibly even uglier. This is a general statement, intended for the broader readership, and I'm thinking it doesn't apply in your specific case here. And if acetone doesn't remove those black dots from the 1921, leave it alone. Heck, it's a valuable coin - maybe leave it alone anyway.

Grading? Small pictures force nonspecific opinion, so that's what I'll offer:

1921: High EF - low AU

1922: A true "slider." I'd be more comfortable deciding whether or not it's Mint State with larger images.

1828: F15-ish, maybe VF20.

1838: A little better than the 1828.

1855: Wish I could see LIBERTY better. The rest of the coin is in the VF range.

Thank you all so much for the knowledge, and input. I got them to work toward trading up and/or reselling, but heck, with the 50 C pieces, all I lack for a complete type set is a Draped Bust, and a Flowing Hair. When I'm 80, I might have saved enough by then to complete my set. :)

In my estimation, you did well for the price. All the coins look "original" enough to warrant the money you offered. Just don't apply any friction to the half as you attempt to get the glue off, just simply acetone dip it.
