I got this coin recently and didn't realize it could be dipped until I see the edge. First question, is it is really dipped ? I believe it is dipped and perhaps XF as I see some wear that corresponds to being short of 0.17g of spec 25g.

if so is it over done ? The coin is not overly white or don't see grainy fields.

Also to me it appears the coin hasn't been recently taken out of the 2x2, so is this likely done some years ago ? The 2x2 it came up with seems to be old, I have never seen such thick 2x2, Perhaps this may indicate how long ago it was dipped ?

I can't help on the dipped question but this is what I found out about the 2x2

1960's -70's was the guess on my 2x2's age.

Yours almost looks like it had a 3rd inner layer so that might mean even older than mine, and mine was a 2 piece, yours looks like it was an actual flip, so maybe newer. But certainly older than a few years

Hope this helps.

I know nothing about dipping but my idle speculation is that air/environment infiltrated around the rim and toned/damaged it, but the surfaces were well-sealed in the holder. The staples look a little "corroded" too. It does seem to have been in the holder for a long time.

Personally, I think it may have been whizzed. Since there is toning on the edge, you should expect there to be some on the periphery of the obverse and/or the reverse...

Thanks for the feedback, very informational . I guess if it was dipped the edge will be cleaned as well.So if it is whizzed or dipped , it was done few decades ago I guess. Were these techniques exist back then ?
