2 marks was something like 1 euro, if I'm not mistaken, but the value, if you collect German coins it's a piece of history.

It's in good shape, worth in the $10-$15 range.

This was an obsolete design that was recalled and demonetized for some reason (I think). It is quite sought after, probably at least worth $20. Excellent find. Seriously, what is up with your junk box?

The coinquest link gives prices that you just don't see these coins selling for. $10-$15 in this condition is what you can expect to get if you put it up on ebay for example.

It was withdrawn and demonetized because the design and size were too similar to the 1 mark coin and people were getting the two coins confused.

Most locals have no interest in foreign coins. Of those that do, we have a lot to choose from.

Right, that is the only coin from this country (Federal Republic of Germany) that has ever been demonetized. No idea why. Sure, it was similar to the 1 DM piece, and that is why it was taken out of circulation. But it would not have been any problem in my opinion to do with that type what they did and do with all the other coins and notes - you take it to a Bundesbank branch office and get the face value in current money. Oh, and contrary to what CoinQuest says, that is of course not the "imperial" eagle. :)

I have been told that the Max Planck 2 mark was also demonetized.

Well, all the DM coins - except for this 2 DM 1951 - can still be redeemed. Yes, the "Planck" pieces were taken out of circulation in 1973. But take one to a Bundesbank branch office, and you would get €1.02 for it. Won't work with the one depicted in the first post ...

(Edit - see link) http://www.bundesbank.de/Redaktion/...dm_euro.html
