Hello, A friend bought this coin recently, I had it in my watchlist as well ... because I found the lions pretty fun (I was thinking "contemporary counterfeit") Here are the auction pictures : Here are his pictures : Here is another one, from an older auction (which means, this coin is not re-engraved for fun) : Does anyone know this type enough ? I'm used to the different styles for the 8 reales ... but not for smaller denominations. Thanks !

The lions look like something out of a Japanese cartoon. These provincial types are always crude, but this is an interesting one. I would have bought it :)

I would also have bought it if I had not forgotten the auction - it was on my watch list ... After having some comments, it seems this type is genuine - I like this variant very much :D

You know as I'm looking, I see this on every example I can find that is not too worn to see the eye detail. Maybe it's not a variant after all. See it on other years for the 2 reales as well, like this one http://www.ebay.com/itm/1821-RG-Mex...em258133b84e

The one you posted is a later variant actually - I usually recognize them (at least on the 8 reales) by looking at the king's hairbrush and laurel leaves. Here is a 2 reales I own, it's a bit worn out, but the lion could match : Here are other example, with the coin above :

See my Kleeberg CC2R update at the MNA website.
Weight? I am thinking debased silver alloy as the other specimen has a green hue to it - debased silver and not german silver excludes it as a Kleeberg and ~$400.00.
Will check further on this rare date of 1819 in terms of a Kleeberg Plate Coin match.

It appears to be either a debased silver or Sheffield issue. Only one 1819 Kleeberg CC2R exist and this is in my collection and its a Lima mintmark and JP assayer. It also has a regal type edge - most Kleebergs are plain edge or with crude markings generally of horizontal slashes.

This is the usual 1819 proper bust Zacatecas, with the usual weird-eyed lion (a rather similar lion is used on the 1R)... 1819 is somewhat scarcer than the common Zac. dates of 1821 and 1820; they can be found, but not usually in higher grade. I have a few in low-to-average grade... Greatly bothered me a few years back when I forgot to bid on this well-detailed piece which sold cheaply for only a tad over $100 (unfortunately for the point of comparing the lions I neglected to save the rev pic in time): They aren't any sort of CC piece... perfectly regal design and execution. Any variation in metal that may be present here would have to be chalked up to in-house debasement and/or poor mint standards. Of course, the 1819 Zac. 2R that draws attention is the scarcer variety with the tiny armored bust (also regal, btw) - they typically sell from $100 up through several hundred.

Never underestimate the crudeness of the Zacatecas Mint <BG>.
