Hello everyone. I've had this coin, a 1853 arrows and rays half, for some time now, and have seen people posting pics of their lowballs. Would you consider this one a lowball? If so what grade do you think it'll get?

I think the coin would have to be worn almost dateless slick with only the hint of a ray around the eagle on the reverse to identify it as the one year only type arrows and rays 1853.

I was thinking there might be to much detail. Especially on the reverse. Thanks for your input.

I believe you squeeze FR-02 from this one. The "lowball" fascination (note my avatar) hasn't yet spread to Seated halves, but if you've a long-term mindset, start stocking up now. They're plentiful, plentiful in heavily-circulated condition, and best of all the mint mark is in a highly protected location. A righteous grade involves ruling out any question about originating mint, making this issue a prime candidate should the lowball thing reach it.

For instance, compare to a Peace dollar. It's virtually impossible to get a gradable Peace in P-01, given the location of the mint mark right on the rim. I'll tell you what, if I were a decade or two younger I'd be hitting junk bins hard for lowballs in any denomination these days. It's probably a 10- or 15-year hold, though.
