I came across this on ebay the other day and something just didn't seem right. It seemed like the lettering was too fat/thick especially in the word "PLURBIS" on the obverse and the first "A" in "AMERICA" looks like it's touching the wing on the reverse.

Also the data looks a bit thick to me.

I just started collecting a few weeks ago, but this listing raised all sorts of flags for me. Can anyone confirm my suspicions or am I wrong in what I am looking at?

The listing has ended, but here's the link while it's still active: http://www.ebay.com/itm/1885-Morgan...171248557618

to the community Mike

It looks alright to me. As the coin wears, the script get worn and seems flatter and fatter. I see no immediate warning signs.

I didn't end up purchasing it myself because I looked fishy to me.

Thanks though ;)

For me, this one falls somewhere in the range of "not a chance it's real." There's so much wrong with it that I wouldn't know where to start describing the problems. The area around RIB is enough to make me walk away immediately, and that's just a start. Yes, letters and devices tend to flatten out and appear larger as the coin wears, but that does not affect what should be appropriate spacing between them. That does not lessen with wear, and I can't find many spaces on this coin which are as large as they ought to be.

The images are small, and I concede a remote possibility that it's real, but I wouldn't risk money on it.

Who would fake a common date Morgan though? Even with the apparent problems, this looks like it's at least made out of silver and is a pretty good copy if the community here can't say 100% if it's fake or not. I just don't see the economic feasibility of faking a common date Morgan in VG/F.

Either way, there is no way I'd pay $30 for that coin, even if it was genuine.

They cost you next to nothing, get very little scrutiny because "who fakes a common date Morgan?" and represent $24 profit on every $25 sold. They're more common than Key fakes, and your own post proves the viability. Nobody suspects them.

I agree with all the points that bring Ddave's suspicions out. but , like Finn, when I look at things like this, I also consider why ? Okay, it might have red flags, but why on earth would someone go to all the trouble and risk over a common date coin, in VF condition.

But I do know one thing, if Ddave says he wouldn't touch it, I,m not getting near it

It's simple. Wider margin of profit in the long term with an unsuspecting collector base.

It's a fake. It is also much easier to pass a fake 1885-P Morgan than and 1885-S or CC. Who looks close at a common date? Non coin people get taken by this trick all the time.

There's no doubt in my mind. It's a cast fake from china. There was a seller on ebay that I came across a while back that was selling fake Morgans like this one and a lot of classic commemorative halves. They have been shut down for quite some time now, at least under the seller's name at that time. I still check about once a week to see if there is any activity.
