Hi. I found this rooting through a bag of nickels I recently got. Bad scratch on the obverse of a near mint nickel lol. Doe's this affect the grade much as well as the desire to buy it? I appreciate any help offered here. Cheers and thanks.
Jon

For me that would be a happy hole filler, considering the age I'd say still a nice find/purchase.

as to grade I'm thinking the beaver has a nasty scratch too, but heck look at a 1936 (or older) American Buffalo nickel worn down and nasty. Or a 1939-D Jefferson?

I'd be glad to find something like that and instantly put it in a 2x2, sure the scratches give a ding to grade but the age more than makes up for it. IMHO

Edit: I'm horrid with grading but I'd say from 1-70... I'd give it a 45+... maybe even 50+

Canadian TPG's and most Canadian collectors use "technical grading". The grade of a circulated coin is based on wear only and the scratch is noted on the holder. Though the scratch does not affect the grade, the desirability and thus price are greatly reduced.
"Dipping" is not considered cleaning...

Nice 1940 nickel, as a rule these are pretty well worn but, this one hasn't circulated that much.

Too bad about the scratch, it does take away from the overall looks of the coin.

To me, eye appeal is quite important.
