WOW! If genuine, I'd say xf-40.

I am having a hard time finding anything to suggest it is not authentic, but the edge lettering should have "FIFTY CENTS OR HALF A DOLLAR." I think the grade would be about vf-20 or possibly vf-25. The only issue are the spots.

Nice coin.... Providing it is authentic. Almost looks too good to be true, though.

Quote: I am having a hard time finding anything to suggest it is not authentic Start with the relative weakness of the device details by comparison to the lettering, most visible at the bottom of the eagle's left wing but present on both faces. I am not optimistic about the authenticity of this coin. However, I'm no expert with this series, and am therefore not pronouncing it counterfeit with any certainty. This coin closely resembles the Overton O-117 variety for this date, which is the only variety with the count and configuration of berries on the reverse which this coin displays. That includes the defect line on the right side of the "Y" I can see in this coin, which is a point in the coin's favor. The level of detail reaches about VF20, which - if the coin is genuine - puts its' value as an R-4 variety in excess of $3000 in a PCGS holder.

Thank you for your comments so far. The coin weighs 13,44 grams, and has edge lettering as described in the Red Book. I bought it at a Christies, NY auction in 1986. I shall take better pictures tomorrow with better light.

What a coin. Most of us will never own 18th century US Silver.
Inquiring mind(s?) want to know, if it's a $3k coin now, how much as it appreciated since 1986?

If it came from Christies in 1986 then that's good enough for me. It'd give it a 99% on authenticity and a grade of VF 30 if submitted for TPG. I LIKE IT!

"The only issue are the spots."
When you are 209 years old you'll have a few age spots yourself! They are not THAT bad. A lovely coin. Love the profile and the eagle.

Thank you all for your opinions. Much appreciated. It is a nice coin, and would seem to be a good candidate for encapsulation. To answer the question about how much I originally paid for this coin - If I remember well, it was about $ 550.
