I have no idea what VAM this could possibly be (that really isn't saying much since I made the leap from copper to silver only a few months back)... anyway...

I've been over the VAM World 1885-P VAMs and I have seen the several 'Dash under 8s' (as well as revisiting all the others). This isn't a dash and none look (are positioned) like this one. Looks more like it's porting a tail, if you will.

There is doubling present on the wreath, and die scratches inside the ribbon and the eagle, and die clash on the neck.

Does anyone has any direction they may be able to point me in, or have seen this before?

Much appreciated.

In the sometimes-confusing, moving-target world of VAMs, 1885-P is among the most vexatious issues. As people uncover new facts, listings and definitions change, and there's a whole_lot left to learn about this one.

That's a die chip to the right of the 8, which ought to be a pretty good indicator of a given variety. If anyone's seen a known VAM with the feature, which is not a certainty. You can narrow the field down by ascertaining date position - yours looks like a Far Date, and the presence/lack of that dash and doubling in the date. Yours looks to have neither dash nor doubling on the 885, which will also help.

No guarantee of success, though.

Your insight is immensely appreciated SsuperDdave. This one is exhausting. An additional 500 points for the use of vexatious.

I'll keep plugging away on this one.

Cheers!
