I'm putting together a circulation set of these, nothing special. Well I was until 2012 rolled around So I found a Teddy Roosevelt (2013) so that was a pleasant surprise. I was curious if the the post '12 coins are mainly NIFC or if you can find them? Also wondering if these can be acquired with slim to no premium. Also does anyone else agree that this is one of the worst sets produced because of... From Wikipedia: Quote: The series is therefore scheduled to end in 2016 after honoring Ronald Reagan, unless Jimmy Carter, or one of Reagan's other still-living successors, dies by 2014. Once the program has terminated, producing coins for those presidents not yet honored would require another Act of Congress. Oh and for some reason people have never really taken to the dollar coin whether Ikes, SBA or any others. Sorry for that rant

I've been hunting them pretty hard and my latest is Chester A. Arthur, 21st... I think that was the last circulation strike. not sure what year it is I hate that it's on the edge and you have to handle them more than other coins but yes post '12 coins are NIFC, as far as I know, nice grab on the Teddy I think they are still being issued in rolls so you can get them at a premium and I guess some people do then just spend them, or give them as gifts that are spent. Quote: Also wondering if these can be acquired with slim to no premium. Well you found one so they are out there, I for one will continue searching them, a few rolls at a time, just for the fun of it. There are so many threads about the dying half and dollar coin it's not even funny. The Ike came out when the dollar was sliding and gas prices were soaring, also check and credit cards have taken over a lot of peoples spending. When it was almost an ounce of silver (Morgan) the weight and dimensions were not as much of a problem and the buying power of one was much more, and of course the size has always been the issue with the SBA and later 'small dollar' coins... too close to a quarter, and easily spent as one. I'd agree it's the worst sets produced because it was produced by the people that give free gifts of plastic shopping bags and hype it like it's made of gold And did I see people saying that the free plastic garbage bag... errr I mean FREE MINT BAG... was only free if you paid separate shipping on it "Here's a piece of junk and it's FREE now pay us to send it to you"

I was pawing through the bag at work and saw a BU Teddy and read the 2013 on the side. I told a teller to google when they started the NIFC and sure enough I swapped it out for a bill and had a nice find. I have All 16 presidents from 08-12, or whatever years there are. They're easy to find since we have that big bag. I have a nice collection actually. I just want to keep it going and finish them. Dollar coins are good for collecting, that's about it

I never get these as change unless I ask. I have started making a point to look into the cash register drawer and see if they have any. When I see them I just offer to buy them all and the clerk always seems glad to be rid of 'em. Even so I have not seen any of the 2013 coins out there yet but I suspect they will be showing up soon.

It also depends on the cashiers. It seems foreigners are virtually allergic to the coins. I tell my employees repeatedly to just use them. I took the register from one of the guys, and in 4 customers I had handed out all 6 in his drawer. He still acts as if they are covered in acid.
Regardless, I do not like them when they get circulated. The brown color they turn reminds me of my sons diapers on a bad day. I am completing my Danscos from mint sets and only ordering certain Presidents for sale.

I gave up on business strikes (since I like to get those from circulation, not mint sets) and settled on proof only. Another factor in this choice is the indeterminate mint mark after being put in the Dansco.

I really don't like that it is cumbersome to find the mint mark on the edge of the President $1 coins. Like jbuck points out, that once you place them in an album, you can not see the mint mark unless you take them back out. I wish them would put the date a mint mark on the obverse as with most coins today.

I have said this before, but I wish this could have been a collector only series, made in the same fashion as the Morgan dollar- 90% silver and 38.1 mm diameter. That would have been pretty cool, I think. I would definitely be collecting these if this were the case.

Maybe they would also give more attention to the portraits being used. Truth be told, if they were not included in the proof sets, I might not really care to build the album.

The saddest part about this series is that for all the r&d money the mint spends no one thought to say "lets change the color, these look horrendous when they circulate"

The color is sort of dictated, though, by the need to differentiate them from Quarters and the limits of the alloy. Even a different color, I often find myself (I carry Presidential dollars a lot) absentmindedly about to give them out as Quarters.
