I'm trying to work on my skills detecting original vs. cleaned coins.

This 1854-O looks good to me, but I am curious about the black toning around the stars. Is this toning original or the vestiges of a coin that has been cleaned and is now retoning? I don't see any cleaning marks on it.

I'm looking for opinions as to whether it's cleaned or original to help me learn what to look for.

Thanks!

I've the thought that the "toning" is as much crud as anything else. It *might* be recovering from a very old cleaning, but I think it was very well-bought indeed at the price paid. The "look" is not alarming for this coin.

If the coin looked like that in MS, I'd be wary of a dip. I agree with SsuperDdave..it might have had an old light wipe, now retoning.
