Definitely a fake. An altered date with a Variety 2 obverse (feather points between the C and A versus I and C on variety 1). Variety 2 didn't start on IHCs until 1886. Comparison:

I agree that altered date is a more accurate description. So how do you report an item on ebay? here's the coin in the listing.

I say it is a fake. The date is way too big and the last feather is wrong.
On 1885 and earlier the last feather of the headdress points between the I and C of America; on 1887 and later it points between the C and A. 1886 is found either way.

The date is definitely altered. There are 5 different date types for the IHC. In 1872, the date should have small erect numbers and no curvature to the date.(Compare the suspect picture with Moe's picture) 1859-1871 large curved date, leaning numbers 1872-1873 small flat date, erect numbers 1873-1880 large flat date, erect umbers 1881-1882 flat date, leaning numbers 1883-1909 curved date, leaning numbers

Altered 100%. The 7 and 2 are dead giveaways. Looks like the person who did the handy work covered it up with Dellers darkener to hide the alterations.

150% fake. You can follow the "Report This Item" link on the listing page to report the item to ebay. They take there sweet time to follow up. There are other ways to report it for faster action and get it in front of eBays coin cops. Maybe somebody who is one of their coin cops here on the CCF boards will see it and get it pulled.

Looking at the Sellers feedback he has already sold this coin (or one just like it) back in April of 2012 for 90$. He got negged for it and received the comments of "this penny was the size of a half dollar".
He knows it's not legit but keeps doing it anyway. Sounds like he needs to get suspended.

I finally saw the report item link. I'm such a idiot sometimes.

The entire coin doesn't look right to me. The lettering, denticles, funny bumps in the field under the chin, and it looks like casting flash on the outside rim at the bottom of the coin.

Either the auction got pulled or it has ended. No longer there.

One thing is for sure, I would have bought it just for the educational value. Better to report them though ;)

Not an altered date, it's a complete fake from start to finish.
