Found 1852 Silver 3 cent in my collection trying to decide which coins needed slabbed. What do you think, is it a repunch, DD or mechanical. Is it worth getting slabbed.

I would say No for slabbing based solely on the fact that it was cleaned and I'm pretty sure there is a nice fingerprint on the reverse.

If at all possible Never hold the coins on the sides. Only hold them by the edges and wear cotton gloves if you have them

Secondly never ever clean the coins. If it's toned or has something on it sometimes it's best to leave be. Even a simple wipe from a cloth can damage the coin under magnification.

ANACS will be the only TPG that would slab this coin. Anyone else and it will be body bagged.

As for the DD...I'm not sure and don't want to give an answer. Prethen is our local 3C expert so I'd wait for his response as well as others.

Grace I think you are absolutely correct about it having fingerprints on as it is a well circulated coin and was boughten from a discount bin.

Reason for the slabbing question was solely for authenicating it as a variety type coin. I agree about never handling coins without gloves also.

NGC would also slab it.

I thought NGC would not slab cleaned or damaged coins...but I could be wrong as I frequently am

Problem coins can be submitted to NCS(the conservation division of NGC) for a details grade.

For authentication, I would send it to ANACS. They will grade it and also note on holder that coin has been cleaned.
