Tell me what you think and then I'll tell you about my purchase of this coin and ask what I should do about it if anything.

It's hard to judge the luster from the pic. I'm no peace/Morgan expert either...that said I'll go...

The glare in the photos makes it hard to tell if there is friction on the high points.

I'll guess MS64 the coin appears like it may have been lightly dipped at one point, the dark bits around the rims are an indication of this, that dip looks like it was done by someone who knew what they were doing and didn't strip the luster off at all. I don't think it was dinged for a details grade, the strike could be a bit more full, that is why I'm not higher on the grade.

Story is not that big of a deal. Just that I bought the coin from a guy at our local coin club. Nice guy, but he had sold the coin as a MS64 at $64.00. I got him down to $58. I've helped this guy twice with people that wanted to unload coins from inheriting them. That's what he does, appraises and sells coins. I have seen him being pretty honest with people. So I have this coin and sent it into ANACS for a free 2 coin grading promotion. It came back as MS61. I thought the coin looked better than MS64. Just wonder if I should show it to him, it's now a lower price coin. Like I said, it's not that big a deal and I'll watch out for his grading standards next time. I sure thought it looked good and maybe they just had a bad day at ANACS

I'd say from your photos this Peace dollar is at least MS63 and probably a MS64 as I said before, the cheek looks clean from hits and ticks, the luster seems there, no real issues and only a slightly weakened strike over a full strike. Not anything like a typical MS61 coin looks for sure. That said a TPG is only an opinion, uneducated and informed opinion, but still an opinion, I have a super nice 1921 Morgan I posted up here when I first joined CCF I thought it was a MS65 minimum, most everyone else agreed too, even SsupperDdave and he knows his 1921 Dollars! It came back from ANACS in a MS62 holder. Crazy, but sometimes it's worth just cracking them out and writing off their opinions, not often mind you, but definitely they are wrong sometimes.

Agree with westcoin thats one to just crack out and forget they ever saw it. Must have been a training day and your coin was the victim or something. First pics look AUish but then the second picture looks like the lusters still there. Neither looks banged up like a ms 61 would be. Thats a really unusual grade to see to begin with

MS61 on a piece like that would seem to be a "market-grade" of an AU coin into an MS holder. For example: "This coin is really an AU55 or AU58 but it's so nice we're going to put it in a MS61 or MS62 holder because it's worth it". I'm not saying that happened, only that it's one possibility.

I agree that it's either a slider or a solid MS63. @BH is probably right about this one.

Well I have heard before, first from a dealer and now from my experience that ANACS sometimes under grades their coins. I also have a 1921 Peace dollar graded MS61 that I thought maybe should have received a higher grade. Yes, I'm gonna have to crack this one out someday. Maybe the next time ANACS has one of their promotions I'll send it in again just to see if it comes back any higher.
