I placed my order on Tuesday morning and today I got a call that the Post Office had a package for me--it was this book.
I wasn't expecting it to arrive until next week so I was pleasantly surprised.

Sweet - thanks for the heads up, unfortunately I blew my spending for the month getting a rare NBS Asylum bound book, only $250 - that was about $60 less than buying each back issue, and some aren't available anymore. It's complete through 1990's still need to pick up the rest of the back issues now. Great deal on a nice reference from David Bowers, can't go wrong with that!

Just finished this book earlier this evening. It was $45 well spent to me.
The book was packed with history, what was happening during the year, what was happening in numismatics, excerpts from historical newspapers.
There were beautiful high quality photos of Double Eagles, stock certificates (a couple of times), mining camps and more. These enhanced the text considerably.

I just read an interview with David Bowers done back in 2004 when he was just starting on this book, he mentioned a lot of background info such as mining camps, and minting the gold process, can you confirm? Looks like I might need to stretch the budget and grab a copy while they are on sale now.

Yes, there is a lot of background info on the California Gold Rush--the discovery, the transportation used to get there, some of the private minters that set up business, the mining process.
The discoveries in Cripple Creek, Colorado, the Klondike, the Comstock Lode are also covered. There are other discoveries mentioned too such as the ones in Idaho and Montana.
I don't think you would be disappointed with this book.

I've never disappointed when it comes to reading a Bowers authored book, maybe not excited with the More Adventures with rare coins, only because it is not in the same vein as the first book, not bad at all just very different that his original idea. I'm sure I'll really like this book as well!
