I am pretty sure the seller was thrilled with this price! I looked at the Grellman book to see if was an ultra rare die type and think its only an R2 coin. http://www.ebay.com/itm/1848-Braide...ht_819wt_644

Yeah, the seller should be happy with that. It's not outlandish, though - I'm calling it "has a decent shot at AU50" and aside the neck gouge it's a nice clean coin with good eye appeal. I wouldn't have gone for it at the price but it's not a calamity for the buyer either.

I agree with Jerryc, but maybe I'm missing something. There are 46 varieties that year and some very rare ones but this looks like an N-2 variety R1+.

I think it's just a case where someone wanted a truly nicer grade without moving into the mint state prices. Which could go into the $300-400 range. Odds are the buyer doesn't even know or care about the Newcomb variety.

it is a nice looking coin except that neck scratch. Looks xf 45 or maybe au50 at best to me. No way I would go that high on it unless it was an r4 or 5 coin.

On the upside, that's as original (color wise) as it gets.

Probably a collector doing a color set, that seems to be the new rage in late date coppers now. Get a complete set with all matching color. This one does look really original!
