I mention many times about Machine Doubling reducing the overall size of the devices. And almost always I mention that hub doubling enlarges devices. But now I have proof about incuse devices. If a device is incuse, the opposite is true. On incuse devices like the VDB on obverse cents a the EPU on the reverse of the shield cents and the incuse devices on other coins, I found this to be true.
1. Machine Doubling makes incuse devices look larger.
2. On a doubled die, the incuse devices actually get reduced.
How can I prove the last statement? I had a friend here on CCF that sent me a couple of coins. The 2013P-1DR-002 is one of them. I am thrilled to have this coin. So thanks Steve for this. It shows just what I needed for my theory on the incuse devices. So I made a side by side of a normal coin and this doubled die to show how affected the hub doubling shows. So here are the images.

Great info Coop. I am still having troubles with telling the difference between MD and DD myself. Not that I've been doing this more then 2 months. A big problem I have is looking for the notching.

Anyway, I have to get a lot more coins in my sights and I guess practice will make a huge difference.

I found that out with the find of that WAM the other day. Now that I've found one and have had it 'in hand' they will stick out like a sore thumb.

I'm hoping the same will happen with the double die issues I'm having.

Thanks for the great info!

The best way to learn on a forum is to read the first post. See what you think it is. Make your determination, THEN read the other comments. This way you teach yourself to think, then see if you are correct. This trains you brain so when you are searching, you can determine what you are seeing.

A doubled die is doubled on the die. Machine Doubling is from a normal die, but appears doubled because a machine malfunction. Keep in mind that you can have a doubled die with Machine Doubling as well.
