I thought I might share the latest buys this weekend from local coin show.

Cuba 1916 1 peso

Seller has labelled this as au cleaned and weight 26.60g. I have an old krause that lists xf at $70 and aunc at $700. Since ebay doesn't allow sale of Cuban coins, anyone know what this is worth ?

Brazil 1813 960 Reis

Can anyone tell if this is an over strike ? The edge looks like a 8 reales on one side and it Weight 26.53g.

Nice Reis!....I believe, could be wrong, that most these were struck over Spanish and Spanish colonial 8 Reales. I think I remember that this was done so that they were more acceptable to the population. Regardless you have a great example.

Nice Peso! That's a $100 coin around here, although AU is overgrading, I think.

Hello Plonker
Yes your Brazilian 960 is struck over a Spanish colonial portrait dollar. In your first picture at 9:00 you can see the top of the crown and the cross from the reverse of the host coin. Use that as a reference point to align the host coin and see what else you can find under magnification. If you can make out date or assayer or mint mark it is possible to make a positive ID on the host coin. If not, at least you know it is struck over a colonial 8 reales.

That Peso is one of my favourite coin designs of all time, for some reason I just love the star. But for now, all I can afford are the aluminum-bronze ones from the 80s...

The Cuban peso would go for around $50 at an open auction. Dealer can probably get $100 in a retail situation.

Ok thanks guys, I think now I can see the 8 reales host coin, will try to look closer to find out more. On Cuban peso, it seems that ebay these are not mentioned under the Cuba but listed under carribian islands. Found couple of 1916 pesos , they are not cheap.

On the Reis is it just certain dates that were struck over Colonial 8 Reales? Nice coins.
