This was a great exercise! Not at all surprised that my grading was below the TPG's. PCGS should be embarrassed by #2....imo.

And I really don't understand the CAC sticker on #8 "AU58" Wear/strike/scratches--I just don't see it.

I didn't get my grades in before the results were posted, but when I compared mine to the TPG's, their grades were higher on 12 of the 14 coins (some considerably higher) and the same for other 2. I don't consider myself an expert grader, but I do follow Snow's guide and I am usually in the ballpark when IHC & FE are posted in the grading forum. This grading exercise was an eye opener for me.

Yeah--this exercise was an eye-opener to me too--keeps me on my toes.

You provided the pics and Rick Snow's grading guide then, you gave the TPG grade.
Grading should be straightforward; I tried to keep this as objective as possible.

Well that was sure interesting, take away my details grades I didn't do too badly, the Goods I went a touch higher as TPG's tend to go on the key dates. I was really torn on the one I called MS as I thought maybe, just maybe it might make it due to luster less the hits and ticks, not even close there!

Thanks for this little reality check! Shows how varied even the TPGs can be. Are most of these in newer holders?

Yeah--it was a good reality-check for me too. I pulled these 'off-the-top' from Heritage. Mostly newer auctions/holders because the pictures are larger and better.

I'm blown away on #8 and #1. #8 has clear wear on ribbon, hair above ear and below ribbon. I guess they liked the strike on the feathers?

On the bright side, my 1877 IHC will now definitely be sent in for grading. According to the old ANA book I used back in the day I graded mine VG. Using these standards I might get VF.

F-12, maybe F-15. I don't see it going to VF, but who knows after seeing the results of the grading game.

By my grading standards, that one is at least F12
