Hi all dear forum members , I just bought a few uncleaned coins. One of these coins caught my eye and I decided to start with it It's almost clean ,cleaning took me 3 days for several hours each day. What do you think of this coin of Aurelian . Can anyone tell me a little more about this coin. I searched the coin, but she is not the same. There is a similar but without wings on the reverse. Edited by Mascot 03/10/2014 5:42 pm

The coin has very nice detail. How did you clean it? Looks like the patina has been removed, that's something that you don't want to do. You don't want it to look shiny.

Might be an idea to start on coins with less detail. Stick to using distilled or deionised water. The one you have done, though very clean, is missing the lovely colour it had in your first picture of it. Nice coin.

The patina is still there just the picture is very bright, the patina is the same as the first photo ( nice black patina ) I cleaned it with dental tools.

Look at this photo. The patina is not touched. I cleaned a lot of junk coins before I started with this. Can anyone tell me more about this coin

The coin is a Antoninianus, the reverse is Aurelian on the left holding a scepter receiving a globe from Jupiter. The reverse legend is IOVI CONSEVATORI, with a *Q in the exe. It is RIC VI 255. circa 271-274 AD

That last photo is much better! Looking at it, a soak in distilled water and a prod with a cocktail stick (blunt one) would move all that crud and then it would be a really nice coin.

Very nicely cleaned, excellent job. Just a bit more encrustation. If you're only picking at this point, you shold consider leaving it in DW between sessions (my first cleans were with jsut a steady hand an a sewing needle).
The 'wings' you see are actually evidence of a damaged die - something has dented the die there or the die has chipped, and the wings are simply metal flowing into this defect. This is from the very very start of Aurelian's reign, as evidenced by the style of bust, which is still at this point very similar to that of Claudius Gothicus.

Thank you, I'll finish it when I get home from school. Today I will buy double flip pockets. And my first cleaning was with needle too. Soon I will show you my new project.
