I ordered an xbox off of an ebay on line store for $30 which was stated to be "brand new in box". Not being completely gullible I figured it was a scam but took a chance anyway. Sure enough, what came was definitely not an xbox. It is an 1878 US one dollar coin. It is in decent shape, shows lots of patina that looks natural. A couple minor dings in the outside edge but nothing severe, overall in pretty good shape for being over 100 years old. I'm just curious if this is a counterfeit reproduction or the real deal. Also whether I should file a complaint with PayPal, or if the coin is worth at least $30. But a heads up to everyone, evidently a "brand new in box" xbox means an old US coin in China lol. Any feedback is appreciated, thank you *** Moved by Staff to a more appropriate forum. ***

Well that's different. What you have is an 1878-CC which if real is worth much more than the $30....however I highly suspect this one is a fake. I'd file a case.

First off, welcome.
Looks like it's "CC" mintmarked as well. Chances are strong it's a fake. A more close-up view would help nail that down, but the Chinese are counterfeiting Morgans on an industrial scale nowadays.

The date looks sort of odd as does the mintmark and being that it's from China doesn't help because that's where a huge portion of fakes originate.

As the others said-- an original "CC" Morgan is worth a fair bit more than $30 but the patina is weird and the coin is too crude for what appears to be a VF-30 with the stars outright flat. I'm 80% sure this a fake. Definitely file a claim with paypal, get your money back and still keep the coin. Makes for a nice keepsake!

I agree, it looks like a counterfeit.
The coin appears to have a grainy look to it, which is common with fakes.

Something about Liberty's jawline looks a bit off to me in addition to the other red flags.

It also appears to have the "reverse of 1921" arrow feather configuration (common on the Chinese fakes). A close-up would confirm. My vote is also a Chinese counterfeit.

Thank you all very much for your input, I appreciate it. I wish I could post more detailed pics, but as I only use my android and currently don't have a computer I cannot get better pics to post as they are over the 100kb limit. It took me 20 min just to get those two pics to be under the allowed limit. I'm not a coin ccollector but am a fan of shows like "Pawn Stars" so I can't believe I didn't think to try a magnet on it. First thing I'm ggoing to do after work But hey, thanks again for helping out the newbie!

I know the picture posting can be daunting the first time or two. The size limit only applies if you are hosting the pic's here. If you're linking to another photo hosting site you are safe up to about 300kb. Anything larger than that the viewer will have to scroll ... and we try to avoid that here. Another thing you can do is crop the pictures. I see a lot of table in those pictures and that wood is not important to us. Here's a cropped version of the reverse. It is indeed the reverse of 1921 and a Counterfeit.

Here's a handy comparison of the arrow feather configurations on the Morgan dollar. Note this is not the tailfeather configuration (8TF, 7/8TF or 7TF) discussed elsewhere.

It's not quite a '21 reverse. The top arrow fletch is wrong. This is actually kind of an interesting one - looks to me like a die built from scratch. The letter spacing is wrong, the eagle'd head is wrong, the arrow heads are wrong. But they included the known "Broken D" in DOLLAR. Kinda cool, if you ask me.
