I have really enjoyed this forum for a few months now and respect the opinions of the members. So here's my first post...

Picked this Buffalo up at the local coin shop the other day for $20. It was definitely an upgrade from what I had. But I am a little nervous about a tiny rust spot in the middle of the obverse. It looks worse at 30x, but this picture definitely shows how looks with the naked eye.

My question is, does this knock the coin down to "details" or "environmental damage"? I really don't have a feel for how a spot like this affects the grade of the coin? As for grade I am no expert, but I am thinking it is around AU-58?

Thanks in advance! John

My best guess that was in contact with some ferrous metal at that spot (staple?)
I don't know of any metal in the nickel alloy that would oxidize to that color.
Ergo I suspect it's source was external to the coin and would come off easily with the correct solvent.
Unfortunately I don't know what the "correct solvent" is in this case (don't want to damage the coin's surfaces).

Wait for other responses.

There is also a small spot on the buffalo's hind quarter, too. While these two spots don't warrant a details or damaged grade, they do detract from the overall appearance of the coin. For higher end coins, you really don't want those types of spots. As for a grade I'm at AU53.
