Hey everyone hope you are all going well Just need some help in terms of getting ancient coins posted from the US to AUS firstly will USPS ship it even tho they state that they won't ship any coins to Australia?
Secondly just in terms of purchasing from Heritage Auctions could someone walk me through the process of getting them here like postal services, tiers, customs documents?
Lastly would anyone have a clue as to how much shipping would be?
Thanks everyone for your help really appreciate it in advance

I've had plenty of coins sent from the US and sometimes marked as a medal or token instead of a coin and usually at a cost of somewhere between $8 and $30.Couldn't tell you much about Heritage sorry

Yeah,USPS package with tracking is around US$22 but you can fit a lot of coins in.Only thing I don't like is the value displayed on the green customs form stuck on the outside.Main Coin dealers buy postage online so the customs declaration is white which is a bit less conspicous, just get the sender to list coins as tokens or"numismatic items" and they clear US customs with no problems.

I've bought from HA before (from an acution) and it was held by customs until I paid GST. They will clearly indicate the total for customs so if its above the threshold you will have to pay tax. For shipping - I emailed them through the website and they ammended my order.

Thanks stevo just found that out but thanks for confirming. Question is if they include buyers premium in the GST calculations? and how to they calculate the GST when it's value is declared in US dollars?

Buyers premium is included as that is what you paid for it and you pay the GST as a percentage of Australian dollars as it is an Australian import duty

There is GST on second-hand goods. This is not a grey area.

Thanks Eric, your comment prompted me to re-investigate the relevant tax law, and it appears you are correct, second hand goods do attract GST from sellers registered for GST. As such, I have removed my previous comment, as it reflected a now redundant position that I have had to review. It is clearer now that there are two classifications when it comes to coins: 1. Bullion (gold, silver, platinum), no numismatic value above bullion value - does not attract GST (precious metals exemption). 2. Numismatic or of collectible value - does attract GST The relevant document can be found here: http://law.ato.gov.au/atolaw/view.h...AT/ATO/00001Imports over $1,000, GST is collected by customs on the way in to AU, regardless whether the seller is registered for GST or not. Once again, thank you for prompting me to re-investigate. Regards, Tim Bowden TDK APDC

the only trouble I've had getting coins from USA to Oz was when the seller insisted on using a private courier. Twice, FedEx got my coin to Sydney, but couldn't find Darwin. I think they gave it to Tom HANKS to look after. In the end, the seller reluctantly agreed to use USPS and it was here in five days, and less expensive too.
But there's a trick with USPS - "First class" is cheaper and quicker than "Express". Express takes about a month - seriously !
