My father, and I, both work at a credit union. Well he does, I'm currently at school but my break starts tomorrow and I'll be back. At school I can't really CRH since I got to a rural school and there aren't many banks with coin here. Anyways, I worked in our branch about 4 miles away from the one where he works. I asked if he could contact the manager of my branch, where there is a coin machine, and get a bag of nickels. I personally love nickels and I'm almost done my set from circulation. Really excited and hoping for some 09's, '14s, Buffaloes, War Nickels, and that ever elusive 50-D. I'll post results later. Also, I kept anything pre-60 on my last box, and I had over 2 rolls full of them, should I keep them all if I find them? Hopefully I get to change my signature too! Thoughts, comments, questions, concerns? Edited by duncanbishop24 03/13/2014 11:07 pm

Soon you will be reporting some incredible find. I just know it. Congratulations on the nickel progress. I have a problem spending nickels. I keep every one I get in change However, most like to keep everything before 1960, so you are good there.

I keep all pre 60 nickels. Have got about 20 rolls of them by now. They probably arent worth more than 2.10 a roll. I guess that makes me a hoarded.

Honestly sitting in class this morning knowing there are 2000 (hopefully I'm not shorted) nickels waiting for me to search. I hope you're right JBuck!

Red seals, consecutive numbers, errors, fancy numbers. Things like that.

Results of the bag are in! 1 War Nickel - '43-P 2009D No buffalo or anything before 1940 actually. Had 4 other hole fillers besides the 43P and 09D. All in all I was happy. The War Nickel is black but it's still a fun find!

No problem, I'm tempted to go back and get another one, or something.

I love nickel searching, too , but try taking about $20 in a bank and getting 2000 pennies. I guarantee that you can get 20 Wheaties

Question... I have many rolls of 2009 nickels, my wife worked at a bank and I told her to save them because someone from another forum had me save them. What is their value and significance besides slightly lower mintage. Thanks

Not as big as you think. I have them in a small box and it is not full. I am a victim of convenience. That is, I use my card more than cash. I seldom get change to look through or keep. My goal is to eventually give the box and a Jefferson album to my son. Fill'er up, kid!

Quote: Question... I have many rolls of 2009 nickels, my wife worked at a bank and I told her to save them because someone from another forum had me save them. What is their value and significance besides slightly lower mintage. Thanks The 2009 nickel saw the lowest mintage across both mints since the 1950s. The low mintage (39.8M P, 46.8M D) was due to a surge of coins coming from dumped coin jars when the recession was hitting particularly hard. The coins themselves are not especially rare or valuable compared to others in the series, but ebay prospectors managed to get their hands on MASSIVE quantities... we're talking multiple $100 boxes. 2009 nickels are artificially rare due to this hoarding, even rivaling some actual key dates in terms of being difficult to find. The market for 2009 nickels is fairly unstable at the moment. ebay tycoons refuse to let their nickels go for reasonable prices (a quick search turned up prices ranging from $8-$150 per roll, no bids on any of them) so they will continue to be rare in circulation. I'm envious that you have multiple rolls of them, but I personally wouldn't pay more than $3-4 per roll for my collection. The general consensus is that a 2009 nickel is a novelty much like a beat up buffalo or V nickel... fun to find but not really worth much. I've personally found 6 (2 P, 4 D) in circulation compared to about 30 Buffalo nickels or 1600 from 1938-1959.
