I was looking at picking up a few world banknotes for cheap.. I know my local LCS buys them for approx. 10 cents each...

But they don't have much in the way of stock..

So I was wondering aside from travels or going to a bank and paying some crazy exchange rate....

Are there any other ways for an average joe to pick up UNC bank notes from all around the world..

Looking for any ideas and different places to get some world notes..

You mentioned about going to the bank ... so, are you talking about bank notes around the world that are now in circulation?

Knowing exactly what countries you are looking for would be helpful.

You can order notes for some countries like Denmark or Fiji directly from the issuer. The shipping and handling charges are somewhat inflated but it is cheaper than traveling to the country yourself.

Many of the issuing authorities set up booths at the major coin shows. I do not know who sets up at the CNA show but many are present at ANA in the US.

Finally, you can join an organization like IBNS which has a worldwide membership and make contacts with members in the countries you are looking for.

I have not tried this, but it has been in the back on mind for a bit now. Almost all major airports will have a small bank with the primary purpose of money exchange. They may not be interested in the type of exchange I would want: Can I have one small note from each of Panama, Egypt, Iran, and Korea, Mongolia, and Fiji? I don't think they normally trade coins, but might have a few?

You probably already have a small note from Panama in your pocket as they use the US$.

A currency exchange in the US will not have Iranian notes because of the trade embargo. They are likely not going to have any of the other countries you list other than maybe South Korea. (They will not have North Korea.) They usually only keep the major currencies on hand.

They will probably also not have UNC notes.

Most of the banks on this island have Foreign Exchange counters and also a few kiosks here and there.

Now most holiday makers are exchanging their currency for local (in this case Thai bahts) but most banks will only take high value ones in good condition.

I have seen them in my own branch here with a large bundle of mixed currencies being prepared for transfer (to the main branch I presume). So your idea might be worth a try but better in a high foreign visitor area.

I joined a banknote club on facebook and have made a few friends. So far I have traded with a friend in Egypt twice and it has been great for both of us. Our trades have been fairly small but building a network of trustworthy friends from a around the globe I figured would take time. Seems like it should pay off for all involved in future years though. Registered mail and lots of group photos and testimonials about other members seem to keep the riff raff out but id still only trade small until real relationships develop.
