Another counterstamp forgery hitting ebay, this time out of Hungary: http://www.ebay.com/itm/33115062851...RK:MEBIDX:ITI have to admit that I like the creativity of the design of this modern fantasy. On the other side, I am shocked that there are already several fools going for it... But since the sale is not private, I may have a chance asking the winner just what made him believe in this!

A few of these countermarked 8 reales have been sold in the past few years. I wonder if one of the dies of the Belleville mint that produced contemporary counterfeits of Haitian coins ca. 1830 has survived...

A question: is the underlying coin genuine and just the counterstamp a forgery, or is the whole thing a fake? Doing a bit of research, I saw that another very similar piece sold on ebay this past December for $875, this one out of Romania: http://www.ebay.com/itm/32126370612..._1118wt_1186

colonialjohn - I see you had actually answered my question just before I posted it. Did you look at the other auction I referenced? I presume the coin there is of the same ilk. Big money being put up for these, yet nobody's reporting them as suspect, evidently.

Each piece has 3 or 4 of the same bidders ... here I think its ignorance in terms of the seller posting these two pieces ... his other stock looks fine and is certified (some). When a counterstamp looks TOO GOOD ... its usually the initial indicator something is wrong - as in this case.

Well, I sent a message to the seller, informing him that his coin was bogus. His reply: "Thank you very much for your message" Also denounced it as a fake to ebay, but as experience has told me, I will never get any reaction from them anyway. The coin is still up. I guess I will have to see the positive side: whoever turns out to be the biggest sucker bidding on it will hopefully not have enough money left to outbid me once the good stuff comes up...

This piece and the Brazil one he has are of the same ilk as all those fake exotic stamps that emanated certain Spain sellers a few years back, right? Those pieces included a bunch of desirable and/or impossible Mexican War Of Ind stamps sharing the same physical traits.
