so earlier today my daughter asked for some money to goto the dollar store so I gave her some 50 cent and nickle dollar coins. when she came back she said they wouldnt take them because they were not real. my daughter then said they were real so the teller asked the other teller about them and she also said they were not real. so I went over and tried to spend them and they told me they weren't real and of coarse I said that in fact they were, so they called the manager up to look at them and the manager said they cant accept them, so I asked why do you not accept Canadian currency? and she said we do but we only accept todays coinage I then pointed out that the 50 cents were from 2012 then she said doesn't matter we dont take them if I have a problem take it up with corporate head quarters(with a really snotty attitude) I said fine I will maybe they can teach you guys what Canadian currency looks like and I left, I will be back with a handful of old 1 and 2 dollar bills next time Edited by gidjit 03/15/2014 6:18 pm

Haha. Good Story. I wouldn`t be surprised if that happened anywhere in Canada. People aren`t educated on the 50 Cent Coins which don`t see any circulation whatsoever. I mean, I got a 50 Cent as changed a few weeks back from a transit ticket machine but otherwise never seen one in general circulation. Disappointing really.
Thanks for sharing.

They don't have to accept them, but that kind of attitude isn't good for business.

small businesses and independently operated businesses have to be very careful when it comes to counterfeits. As a vendor you always have the right to decline a sale if you believe funds are counterfeit.. It's not good business but you're entitled to protect yourself...
It's a sad state that many people aren't aware of what is recognized as legal currency or not.... I have in the past had a few "bird series" notes that I spent at costco but two or three tellers had to chime in before they could ascertain it was in fact legal currency.
Sad... but sometimes just to get your money from "spenders" you just have to take 'em to the bank.

gidgit the reason they and many other places will not take them is because the banks wont take them... I tried many times at the Quikies stores and same thing.. 2 banks told me sorry we dont accept them either due to a regulation from the mint....
So if the mint wont honor them then why keep making them.. ya I know collectors and profit

sad to see, a young girl feeling special, spending those coins that lot's of girls have never or been offered the chance to spend. Seriously that would be a special moment.........right! Then declined, I do know that the man who owns dollarama lives in Belleville. However, me as a consumer have never seen any fineprint on the legends stating not legal tender in Canada. But if the banks and dollarama won't take them, then I guess they are not legal tender and ok to melt or scrap!

Although they are legal tender, any business can -choose- not to accept them including banks. While it's not good practice to refuse money, the business needs to protect itself. Just take your business elsewhere and go to a different store or bank.
At the banks, it is up to the individual Branch Manager whether they will take them in. Most will but none like to. Some ship them away as quick as they receive (costs money to do this), some keep them and have customers that come and get them or wait until someone shows up and asks if they have any sitting around. Either way, they have to count and store them and they sit on the books until they can get rid of them.

It's too easy to confuse halves with quarters. I think that's why they stopped being circulated. Why not do what the British did and cut off the ends to make it non-circular.

The Minister of Finance should require the banks to accept any legal tender coins period, sure it costs the banks a little extra work and costs to ship, but every 90 days they make 1 to 2 billions dollars off our backs. Banks are regulated not to charge any fees on cashing government checks.

I went to RBC and asked a teller if they had any 50c pieces... Stunned silence.... Asked again, she called over another teller... "No such thing"... Asked for the supervisor, she came over, dear in the headlights look on her face, "No no no" while waving at the door...
Forget dollarama (I would've expected the reaction you got) but The Royal Bank !?!?

The one who works at the cashier is usually someone who gets paid by the hour at minimal wages. When they don't accept your coins, they might be just trying to avoid taking in counterfeits that can give them cash penalty. The manner is quiet harsh, though.
