1980-P Jefferson Nickel... Something Odd..

Can anybody tell me what is going on here?

This is a 1980P Jefferson nickel in the original mint cello.. the color is not true, I enhanced the image to better show how the "P" looks different.

This is a 2004P Jefferson nickel. I posted this for a comparison to what I normally see the "P" look like.

I have an '82 that looks about the same, I think it's just the mushy P of the time

They used different punches till they retired them. The post 1990 coins have the mint mark as part of the die, not using a punch.
