Looks like a 1972 mint set.

I believe the '71 token is the same unless I'm confused.

What did the original set look like with the token still inside?

I can't see the OP's picture at work, but I recently went through and opened a bunch of US mint sets from 1970 to current date.

-1970 has separate red and blue plastic tokens with each mints name on it. There was two tokens because only one Kennedy half was in the set leaving room for 2 tokens.
-In 1971, that set had two Kennedy halves and only had room for one generic us mint plastic token.
-1972 was the same as 1971 with only 1 generic token.
-In 1973 they did away with the tokens to make room for the Ike dollars.

Eventually they switched to the stamped copper token which could be confused as a cent, not sure which year(s) though....

So from 1970 onward, I've only seen the plastic tokens in those 3 years from 1970-1972. I'm not sure about pre-1970 sets.

So, it's 1971 or 1972. Has there ever been any serious inquiry into whether the two years can be differentiated, or is variety-hunting limited to metal objects only?
