Brad from Brad's Coins sent me this email:
Hi Matt, is this the correct email address to reach you? Just wanted to say thanks for your purchase yesterday. Stay in touch, BRAD
And my reply:
WOW, what an unexpected email! I like doing business with dealers who are real people. You and Cobey are REAL! She helped me yesterday. In addition to the coin that I bought from you, I had another choice in mind. After considerable study, she simply said, "These are not for you." What with such honesty, how can a buyer do badly by Brad's Coins? Highly unlikely. Keep up the good work and see you and David next Sunday in Willimantic. Oh, the banter which will take place ... Matthew
Are ANY of you fortunate enough to have a dealer/buyer relationship such as this?

I'm going to move this over to the main forum. I think we'd get better responses for you there :-)

Thanks vermontensium. It is my intention that our stories, told in detail, will help encourage the members to assemble a set of dealers before they set out to assemble sets of coins. Soon they start recommending coins which will match your goals, and even hold a newly acquired coin so that you will have the first right of refusal. This approach has worked well for me. "Thanks Matt. My only wish is that I could have more nice coins for you, but then that would take away the fun of the hunt! They seem to find me!" When Brad gets lucky with the Barber dimes I get lucky too.

I am not so lucky yet to have found an honest dealer like that anywhere near my area.
Glad to hear that you have such a positive relationship!

Locally my favourite dealer is Robert at Calgary Coin. He buys and sells at fair prices and doesn't try and rip me off because I'm young. He also has one of the biggest selections in Canada.
Online it would be Mary and John at MNS (Moneta Numismatic Services). They also have a huge collection. Always cater to my needs, give me good discounts on top of their already good prices and carry my want list to their coin shows.
I consider myself lucky to do business with all of them.

The gentleman at the local coin shop I frequent his name is Louis. He was patient with me when I first started out and was willing to discuss the coins I am interested in. I haven't seen him much since he retired, but the other guys working in there are great too.
I haven't found an online dealer to become my go to one yet. There are so many out there.

Most of my US and Canadian coins come from people who are members of CCF, so CCF has to be my favorite.

My Local coin shop is O'Connell's , and they are awesome, actually they are some of the nicest people I have ever met. They even interact with my 21 month old son. If you are ever in Columbus, GA, look them up. Favorite online retailer is E-bay ( I know that's weak ), have not found a good online retailer yet

Almost an impossible task to note one dealer. I go to so many coin shows and meet all kinds of dealers. Many have coin or hobby stores in the area so they take their time to make you feel like a person. So few dealers at a coin show are rude or ignorant since they well know people buy from people they like. And too, if they also own a store, they want you to go there so being nice just helps that too. At one show I go to of about 80 to 100 dealers there is only one that is just not friendly. Most treat people like a lost family member. Of course that is just buisness.

This is great guys. I do not want a new collector to become disillusioned for having run into one bad dealer. Most are just fine. And a few go beyond the call of duty. Brad is one who goes beyond for me. That makes him special. Brad does not maintain a brick and mortar shop, but he does do a number of shows in the Northeast region. His email address is:
bradscoins@ymail.com
Tell him that you know Matthew Student and that he provided your email. And say that you are a CCF member. Then proceed to give a detailed want list. Mention color, strike, grade and any particular characteristics you prefer. As I collect by strike color is not important to me. I would write something like this:
Brad, I am focusing on the Barber Days in XF and AU. These are the dates that I am seeking for now: 1895 and 1901-S. I am particularly interested in these two at present. Oh, color is not important but sharp strikes are, especially from those nasty New Orleans issues. Please keep me in mind.
Your want list of course will be different. One thing to know is that he is not heavy into bullion or modern issues. He doesn't care for silver dollars so you may be able to take them off his hands, especially if you buy in quantity.. I will be seeing him in Willimantic, CT. this coming Sunday, so I can examine coins from your want list if you write to him soon enough and give you feedback. I'll give him a heads-up to expect incoming mail.
I plan to introduce dunkinbishop24 to him. This is Duncan's first coin show and I will tutor him in what he needs to know. Any other CCF members will also be introduced to him as well.
Really, Brad is the only dealer that I can recommend without reservation.
Send me your want list as well. I usually see him once a month and can evaluate the coin for you. I'm sure that he would appreciate a small but dedicated group of mail clients.

Great thread! I am looking for dealers who sell on line and who have a web site that makes ordering easy- like a shopping cart. I have been buying from Alaska Coin Exchange- they take Paypal which makes ordering easy for me. I also like the site for Village Coin in NH altho I think they are a bit overpriced in some areas. If anyone knows of dealers with active websites and a good stock, let me know, thanks!

When purchasing online, is it better to work with a specific vendor rather than go through ebay?
