I've owned this 1822 farthing for years. I bought it at a coin show in Milwaukee, WI back in the 1990s as a Gem brown uncirculated coin. It has beautiful brown, blue and purple surfaces, shimmering luster and is exceptionally well-struck.

I was looking at it tonight, especially the color and surfaces, and began to wonder if it might be possible that it is a proof. I don't have any references that illustrate proof milled coinage and haven't been able to find any references online with photos.

There is a line under George's chin and some marks on his neck, but they look like they are striking issues, perhaps a clashed die, and not bag marks. The second 2 in the date is doubled on the bottom.

I don't think the odds that it is a proof are great, but thought I'd ask.

I took a few more photos at an angle to try and capture the color and fields better. You can see the mark under George's chin which appears to be as struck and not a bag mark.

There's nothing to suggest it is a proof.

A proof is known for the date with the die axis en-medaille. Peck 1410 refers.

Thank you for the help. I guess it's a nice circulation strike.
