The coin weighs 4.96 grams and measures just over 2.1mm, so that sounds about right. But on the reverse the middle is silver and the outer is a light goldish colour. Any ideas if it's real? It's not a key date so I don't know why it would be faked, but who knows what gets faked these days. Any help would be much appreciated. *** Moved by Staff to a more appropriate forum. ***Edited by awallin01 03/19/2014 7:51 pm

I see no reason to doubt it; the color is simply environmental exposure expressing itself artistically.

Thank-you ever so much for the reply SsuperDdave, I really appreciate it :). I was hoping it was real, I'm gathering my first US coins into my collection-only small coins at the moment. I just found the toning to be odd as it's so metallic silvery in the middle and goldish on the wreath and outer part. Would it grade F-15? Or is that to high?

Solid VF+, probably vf-30, but the rim nicks hurt it.

I'm very pleased with this purchase :), more so for it being a higher grade than expected. A couple of pounds well spent, even though it's not perfect it's a nice addition to my collection :D. I think I'm hooked lol, great addiction though I spend my money on coins and learn history aswell as learning about coin collecting which is very interesting-so much to learn. Every great journey starts with a single step-I'm taking baby steps :D.
Thank-you ever so much for the help with this coin, it is very much appreciated.

Looks like a real one to me too. The rim dings hurt any coin, sometimes we forget to look at the third side when making a purchase. I know some people don't mind them, but I absolutely abhor any rim damage at least PMD, I'm good with Cuds and the like, but big dings or nicks I stay away from. The surfaces on this nickel look to have a mild corrosion. So I'd grade this coin at details VF30. For a couple of £'s not too bad as a type coin, but I'd look to upgrade to a better coin down the road - especially if this is going into a collection of course. What a great attitude - I find coin collecting will take you down paths you never thought you'd go on through history! I always hated history in school until I began collecting coins and reading Q. David Bowers books, then history became a passion for me, and after coins, all I ever read, has to do with history and how it relates to coins now.
