I believe this is an RPM. I really hope so, it'll be my first. I looked on Coppercoins but I didn't find any that really correlated with this one.

There does appear to be an extra serif at the top. Hope the photos are adequate.

Have a great night.

Looks like Machine Doubling. It is flat shelf like and reduces the mint mark.

0 for 2 with these RPM's. Machine Doubling gets me every time.
Thanks for the lesson though. Hope you're doing well tonight.

It does look like flat shelf MD, but if you look close it looks like minor upper and lower serfs. The mint mark is kind of fat

"Fat" mint marks were normal for 83.

What I try to do with anything that is suspect for Machine Doubling is this;

Look at the affected area which might be Machine Doubling. The Machine Doubling typically flows in the same direction on most devices. So, in this case since it looks like the "D" is affected on the top right of the "D", and going SOUTH and WEST, then other devices, like the date might show damage in that general direction.

Nornally if an RPM exists, and you can see that much separation at the top and the first mint mark left enough of an impression on the coin, there should be some evidence of it elsewhere, especially on the lower side of the coin. It's not always the case, but sometimes you get to see a split serif, or the "underbelly" of the other "D".

In this case it looks like part of the "D" simply chipped off the die that strikes the planchets, giving it an almost RPM look.

On this example it is not part of the mint mark that chipped away. The dies moved during the strike or during ejection the coin too a hit.
It is was die movement that caused this, you might see at the tops of the date in the same direction the same marks from the same angle. If it was caused during ejection these marks at the tops of the date will not be there. Sometimes the mint mark is taller than other devices and takes a hit during the ejection process. Both are called Machine Doubling as the die was normal, but were altered by the machine.

Mike: Can I add your image to my educational files? It is a great example of showing the Machine Doubling on the mint mark. It show the reduction affect on the "D" nicely.

If you're asking me, then certainly. You have permission to use any of my images of coins for your educational dvd without my permission. Anything I can do to help.
Name's not mike though. It's Bart. Though usually I get called mark, not mike. So that was a change up.
I enjoy when you guys have a good discussion about the coins on the forums, it imparts some knowledge to us newbies.
Thanks for looking at the coin guys. I hope you all have a great day.
