I picked up this 1858 Small Letter Flying Eagle for $27 at the LCS. I'm still fairly new at raw coins, but I thought for under $30, I'd take a chance.

How'd I do?

Looks like an F-15 Details coin with Environmental Damage. I think you paid too much for this as problem specimens in any grade XF or lower are plentiful for the flying eagle series.

I think for $30 you could have found a nice problem free FE in F12-F15 condition. Sorry, but I agree that you overpaid for that coin. Fortunately, it is only a $27.00 mistake. I made plenty of them when I started

Thanks everyone. I'll chalk it up as a couple of dollars spent on tuition to the numismatic university.

Yeah, maybe an $8-10 coin tops.

We've all being there :-)

At least it wasn't $2700!
