Hi everyone. I'm just getting into coin collecting. So far I've picked up some fairly common walkers, buffalos and Lincolns. My question is about future value and the right time to buy the Lincoln cents and Buffalo nickels. Do you vision these going up in value over the next 5 or so years?

Going up in value ... YES. Beating inflation ... NO.
Don't think of coin collecting as an investment. Think of it as a pleasurable pastime.

Also depends how deep your pockets are and/or intentions are. If you buy high end key dates than yes, you should make a small profit in the future. If you are collecting the more common, lower grade coins for collecting purposes or just to have fun (which 99% of this hobby should be), than not really.

Thanks for the quick replies everyone! Its just a hobby and I'm not it to make profit. Just like know some longer term potential value so I look later and crack a smile. In don't have really deep pockets either.

PCGS has some charts showing coin returns over time including one chart devoted to key dates. That chart is actually very impressive as I recall.

persistnt made a good point: In summer, the nice weather and vacations take people away from coins. In winter, people stay home and work on their collections. My most expensive coin was bought during the first week of August, 2005. On ebay no less and NO competition! Just saying ...

Go slow, learn to grade and don't just fill holes.
If you decide to go for Buffalos, shop around and make sure you can see all 4 digits. It's a lot easier to eventually sell a coin that you don't have to squint to see the date...
