Hey fellow coin addicts ...got a quick question for you all..What would be the reason on why a circulated 1976 bi-cent "clad" P mint quarter would weigh between 5.70 and 5.74 grams...?

I'm kind of stuck on this one and and only conclusion I can come up with is this > if it was struck on silver would it not be 90% unless I stumbled upon some bi centennials struck on silver-clad planchet right?... Maybe foreign planchet but I haven't been able to find anything that would come close as of yet( not been working on the foreign planchet thing long so I imagine there are probably some possibilities?

Thanks for any help.

I think the spec for 1976 is 5.75 grams. Can someone double check me?

Cheers!

Edit: double checked myself http://www.coincommunity.com/us_qua...shington.asp I believe yours is normal

Yes that would work. You might try a know silver coin to match it with, then try matching it with a know clad. The difference should show for you. This even works in a album so you don't have to remove the coin to see which is which. All you need is a single layer of facial tissue and lay it over the coins.

Wow how in the heck did I forget to try this test as I just used it a week or so ago on some other coins just to see if it really works and you betcha it does..

I will give it a try when I get home and post back with the results... Thanks again guys, sometimes you will have to excuse me as the meds really get to me and half the time in in the clouds floating and forgot the most obvious things to try.

Also I would like to say thank you to Coop for the amazing cd you compiled that has already taught me a lot on some of the things I wasn't quite understanding but when you actually see a good large example of some of these varieties/errors on large detailed pics with informative information to go with it, it really makes it an easy way to learn along with the obvious book research that is a must as well... tahnks for all you and the others do for this site

I'm thrilled you enjoyed it that much. That one was version 9. I'm still stuff for the version 10. (I add a few things as I find new stuff to add.) My goal was to help new ones get up to speed in a lot shorted time it took me to get where I am now. Thanks everyone for all the images that I use along with ones I have already.
