Hey guys, I don't want to bother you with stuff that just doesn't matter. And maybe my eyes are getting crooked after looking at a few coins today... But this one caught my eye because the mint mark seems very weak. What do you think?

What you have is a late-die-state nickel, one that was struck from a die that was nearing the end of its usefulness. It had becoming "tired" and was starting to show weakness. You can see weakness in the date as well as the mint-mark.

(Don't worry about bothering us by asking questions; that's what we're here for!)

You guys are great. You're really making this hobby much more interesting for me (newbie status)! I feel like that should be a hashtag. Anyway, I guess this coin is pretty common then. Seems like I see this more with 80's nickels.

Over polishing a die will reduce the size of devices. That maybe the case with your mint mark. Note how weak the date is also?

Ahhh, I see that now. I'm guessing something like this is worth around 5 cents, huh?

Correct. I have a couple of examples where the die was so abraided, the devices were weak.
Weak-Mint-Mark.
In this example the polishing to remove a clash was so deep that only the top part of the die, (which the devices are wider at the bottom and narrow at the top) show as a thin device.

Weak-Mint-Mark.
On this one, the die must of had damage on the outer area of the in the devices on UNITED. When they polished it down, it removed the wide part of the devices and thinned the devices appearance on UNITED. The rest of the coin was normal. Possibly a die dent on the die was removed.
