The Habsburg family line like many European Aristocratic families suffered some genetic faults. For the Habsburgs this was the jaw. It s known as prognathism. I understand the family still has the problem today but now it is corrected surgically. Some notable Habsburg Rulers have suffered the Habsburg Jaw such as Leopold the Hogmouth. I went to the bank yesterday and took some coins out of the deposit box for photographing. I thought I would post this one. Its a late 17th century double thaler of Leopold the Hogmouth. The reverse is actually a little larger than the obverse. The reason being the coin was produced in a roller mill and for this coin the two rollers didn't quite line up. The edge is not 90 degrees to the face as the edge had to be cut at an angle so as to have both faces undamaged Edited by austrokiwi 03/27/2014 03:15 am

Great coin!
It's hard to beat these older large silver coins for both look and feel.

Great coin, great chin! If I remember correctly, the book "Taler und Schautaler des Hauses Habsburg" provides a stunning proof of this if one lookes at the physical features of the monarchs.

I was just reading a biography of Prinz Eugen. Now I see what his emperor looked like. Thanks.

Its a coin It has no date on it. It dates to around 1690. It is listed in Krause as KM# 1119.2

Wonderful thaler! I had no idea the condition still affected the family today. Apparently lots of the Habsburg men grew beards to hide it (the women were less fortunate), but here Leopold is clean-shaven - wonder why?

Here is another coin showing Leopold. It is a fairly low grade, but it does show his large chin. (Also note the Madonna and Child on the reverse). It is a 15 Krajczar dated 1681, about the size of a US half dollar, and, I think, silver. If you mistakenly rotate the reverse, the date looks like 1891. <g> Bill
